View profile of H&CO LLPOpening a US business bank account as a non-resident founder is one of the steps that surprises people most. The requirements come from each bank, and no official source sets them, so what follows is general. Banks usually ask for the company’s formation documents, an EIN, the operating agreement or bylaws, identification for the owners and a description of the business. Some banks and online providers accept non-resident owners, others do not, and some ask the owner to visit a branch.
A firm can prepare the documents, help you obtain the EIN, introduce providers that serve foreign owners and explain the compliance questions you will be asked. It cannot promise approval. Ask what is included, whether the fee is refundable if the application is refused, which banks it has placed clients with in the last year and whether you need to travel to the US. Check the profile for languages: Spanish and Portuguese appear often on this list. The US country guide explains the steps that come before the bank.
Few firms offer this service: 27, made up of 14 accounting firms and 13 corporate services providers. 22 serve foreign clients, and non-resident founders and Latin American entrepreneurs are named as client groups. View profile of Pro Tax of New York, Inc.Sometimes. Policies differ between banks and online providers, and some ask the owner to attend in person. A firm used to foreign owners can tell you which options are realistic, but nobody can promise an approval.
Banks generally ask for one, together with the formation documents. International applicants without an SSN or ITIN apply for an EIN by phone, fax or mail, and a firm can help with that application.
Treat any promise of approval with caution. Banks decide for themselves, so ask what the firm refunds if the application is declined and what it actually does in return for the fee.
