VAT in Austria

VAT in Austria is called Umsatzsteuer, and the number that identifies a business in EU trade is the UID-Nummer, issued by the tax office. A company set up in Austria registers for VAT as part of its tax registration, while a business based in another country may need an Austrian registration of its own if it sells goods held in Austria or supplies services taxed there. The standard rate is 20 percent, with reduced rates, mainly 10 and 13 percent, for listed supplies. Advance returns through FinanzOnline are due by the 15th day of the second month after the period, and the period is a quarter where the previous year’s turnover did not exceed EUR 100,000. The detail that costs foreign owners most is usually the invoice: a missing UID number, the wrong reverse-charge wording, or a cross-border supply reported in the wrong field.

Questions for an Austrian VAT adviser

Ask whether the firm will apply for the UID number and register the company for VAT, and how long the Austrian tax office usually takes. Ask how often your company will file and whether the firm also prepares the recapitulative statement for supplies to other EU countries. Check who reconciles the VAT account with the books before each filing, and whether corrections are charged separately.

Frequently asked questions

Does a foreign business need an Austrian UID number?

It depends on what it sells in Austria, to whom and from where. Holding stock in an Austrian warehouse or supplying services taxed in Austria can require registration even without an Austrian company, so ask an adviser to review your flows before trading starts.

What does an Austrian VAT adviser need from me?

Sales and purchase invoices, bank statements, customs papers for imports and the VAT numbers of business customers in other EU countries. When the same firm keeps your books, most of this reaches it anyway and the filing can be prepared straight from the ledger.
