VAT in Georgia

Value added tax in Georgia is charged at 18%, and a business must register once its taxable supplies exceed GEL 100,000 in any twelve consecutive months. Registration is also possible earlier, on a voluntary basis. The point that surprises many founders is the speed: the Tax Code asks a person who crosses the threshold to apply within two business days. A company selling services to clients outside Georgia should ask how those invoices are treated before issuing the first one.

Ask a prospective firm whether it monitors the twelve-month total for you, who submits the monthly declaration, and whether it has handled VAT for companies selling digital services or goods across borders. Check the languages it uses for correspondence with the Revenue Service and with you.

Frequently asked questions

When must a company register for VAT in Georgia?

Once taxable supplies exceed GEL 100,000 over any twelve consecutive months, registration is required. The Tax Code asks for the application within two business days of crossing the line, so ask a firm to watch the total.

Can I register for VAT voluntarily?

Yes. A person may register voluntarily, which some businesses do when their customers are VAT-registered companies. Ask a firm whether it makes sense for your sales mix before you apply.

How often are VAT returns filed?

The VAT accounting period is a calendar month, and the declaration and payment follow by the 15th of the next month. A firm that keeps your books can prepare it from the ledgers.
