Virtual office in Ireland

A virtual office gives a company an Irish business address without a desk. The Companies Registration Office requires that every company maintain a registered office in the State, at a physical location rather than a post box, and allows it to be placed in the care of an authorised agent. For a founder abroad, that agent is often the firm that keeps the company’s records.

Not every virtual office does the same job, so ask what is included. Does it cover the registered office address, mail scanning or forwarding, a business phone line, or meeting rooms? Who receives official letters from Revenue and the Companies Registration Office, and how fast do they reach you? Check, too, whether the address can be used on invoices and your website.

Remember that the registered office is only one part of the company’s presence. The Registrar also asks where the company will carry on its activity in the State, so a virtual address alone does not replace a genuine operation.

Thirty-nine firms on Accountanty list a virtual office service in Ireland: 30 accounting firms, 8 corporate services providers and one law firm. Thirty-one are small, 6 medium and 2 large networks, and 22 say they serve foreign clients. Pair this with the company formation page when you plan the start.

Frequently asked questions

Can a virtual office be my registered office?

In principle yes, provided it is a real address in the State where the company's post is received and handled. Ask the firm to confirm that it can act in that role for a company with owners abroad.

What happens to the letters sent to the address?

That depends on the provider. Ask whether mail is scanned, forwarded or held, how quickly, and whether official notices from Revenue are flagged as urgent.

Is the virtual office enough on its own to set up in Ireland?

No. The company must still carry on an activity in the State and meet its filing duties. A virtual office is a service alongside accounting and secretarial support, not a substitute for them.
