Audit in Norway

An audit is not automatic for a small Norwegian limited company. Altinn says an AS can normally opt out of auditing if operating revenue is under NOK 7 million, assets under NOK 27 million and the average number of employees is under 10 full-time equivalents, and the general meeting decides. A group owned from abroad should test these limits against the Norwegian company, and ask whether the same test applies to a Norwegian branch.

Authorisation matters here. Ask whether the partner who would sign is a state authorised auditor, for the registration number, and whether the firm already works with your parent’s group auditor. Check how the audit fee relates to the accounting fee and whether one firm can do both for the same client.

Audit is the narrowest service on Accountanty in Norway: seven firms, all of them accounting firms. Four are medium-sized and three belong to large networks. Norwegian is offered by all seven and English by six, five have a foreign-client focus, and none publishes pricing. The firms are mostly in Oslo. For the accounts an auditor reviews, see accounting in Norway; the Norway guide explains company types.

Frequently asked questions

Does my small Norwegian company need an audit?

Not necessarily. Under the thresholds Altinn publishes, a company below all three limits can normally opt out by a decision of the general meeting. If one limit is passed, an auditor is needed.

How do I check that an auditor is authorised?

Ask the firm for the partner's registration number and check it with Finanstilsynet, the financial supervisor, before you sign the engagement.

Can the same firm keep my books and audit them?

Independence rules usually separate the two roles for the same client. Ask the firm how it handles this, and expect a different team or firm for the audit than for the bookkeeping.
