Residency and visas in Norway

Founding a Norwegian company does not by itself give the founder a right to live in Norway. For a founder from outside the EU/EEA, the Directorate of Immigration (UDI) says a self-employed person’s business normally has to be a sole proprietorship, not a limited company, so the structure you pick can decide which permit is open to you. EU/EEA nationals follow a separate route. Which permit fits depends on your nationality, your role and the business.

Ask an adviser whether it prepares the application or only explains it, which permit categories it handles, and whether it works with a lawyer. Ask what it needs from you, how it keeps the company plan consistent with the permit, and what happens when UDI asks for more documents. Check the licence on the profile, since residence advice and tax advice are different professions.

Frequently asked questions

Can I move to Norway by setting up a company?

Not automatically. Non-EU/EEA nationals generally need a residence permit that allows work, and the type of business can affect which permit is available. Check with an adviser before you choose the company form.

Do EU/EEA citizens need the same permit?

They follow a separate route from non-EU/EEA nationals. Ask the adviser to confirm the steps for your nationality and how long you plan to stay.

Why do some firms offer visa help and others not?

Immigration advice is a separate skill. Only five of the 36 firms offer it, and two of them are law firms. Check the profile and ask who handles the application.

General information, not legal or tax advice. Rules, rates and fees change: check them with the official sources linked on this page or with a qualified adviser before you act.
