Residency and visas in Portugal

Owning a company in Portugal does not by itself give you the right to live there. Residency and visa support covers the permit that lets a founder, investor or employee stay and work: what category fits, which documents are needed, where to apply and how the permit links to the company’s own registrations. Rules differ for EU citizens and for people from other countries, and they change, so rely on an adviser who checks the current requirements.

Immigration work is legal work in many cases, so a profile that lists law firms or lawyers in the team is relevant. Ask who prepares and submits the application, whether the firm handles family members, how it tracks appointments and renewals, and what it charges if an application is refused. Check that English is spoken by the people who will handle your file.

Accountanty lists 40 firms in Portugal that provide residency and visa support: 20 accounting firms, 10 corporate services providers and 10 law firms. English is offered by 38 of them and Portuguese by 32. Real estate, startups and freelancers are the industries named most often. Compare firms in Lisbon or Faro, or read the Portugal guide.

Frequently asked questions

Does forming a company give me residency in Portugal?

No. A company and a residence permit are separate. Some permit categories relate to running a business or investing, but each has its own conditions. Ask a qualified adviser which category matches your plans.

Do EU citizens need a visa to work in Portugal?

EU citizens have free movement rights, but they still have registration steps if they stay long term. People from other countries usually need a visa or permit before or soon after arrival. A firm can confirm the steps for your nationality.

Can the same firm handle my company and my residency?

Some firms offer both, and that can save coordination. Check who is licensed to give immigration advice, because it may be a lawyer working next to the accountants, and ask for separate scopes and fees.
