Tax compliance in Portugal

Tax compliance is the recurring side of owning a Portuguese company: income tax returns, the annual accounting and tax information declaration, VAT filings and the registers the state keeps on your company. The calendar is fixed by law. The corporate income tax return, for example, goes in electronically by the last day of May for a calendar-year company. A founder abroad needs someone who watches those dates and files on time.

On a profile, look at the languages offered, the entity types the firm files for, the industries it names and whether it works with non-resident owners or foreign investors. Ask who prepares the returns, who signs them, how you approve a filing before it goes in and what the firm does if the tax authority writes to you.

Accountanty lists 124 firms in Portugal for tax compliance: 99 accounting firms, 14 corporate services providers and 11 law firms. By size, 92 are small practices, 25 are medium-sized and 7 are large networks. Portuguese (98) and English (97) lead, with Spanish and French at 26 each. Frequently asked questions

What tax filings does a Portuguese company make each year?

Typically a corporate income tax return, the annual accounting and tax information declaration, periodic VAT returns if the company is registered for VAT, and withholding declarations when it pays staff or suppliers. The exact list depends on the company type, its activity and its tax year.

Who is responsible if a filing is late?

The company and its legal representatives remain responsible, even when a firm prepares the filing. Ask the adviser in writing which deadlines it monitors, how it reminds you and what it covers if it misses one, before you appoint it.

Can a foreign director deal with the tax authority directly?

Yes, but access to the tax portal and notifications is in Portuguese and tied to Portuguese tax identifiers. Many foreign owners give an adviser access instead and keep approval of every filing. Check that the firm will send you a summary in English before it files.
