Accounting and bookkeeping in Denmark

A Danish company is bookkept in Danish kroner and reports through a yearly report filed with the state, so an accountant is rarely optional once the company exists. The Danish Business Authority fixes the filing deadline at six months after the end of the financial year for classes B, C and D, with four months for class D, and it does not grant exceptions. For a founder abroad, the practical question is who keeps the ledger day to day and who signs the report.

When you read a profile, look at the working languages first: a firm that keeps your books in Danish should still be able to report to you in English. Then check which entity types it handles (ApS, A/S, branch, sole proprietorship), whether monthly bookkeeping and the annual report are one fee or two, and whether the profile shows a published price.

Accountanty shows 19 firms in Denmark that offer accounting: 17 accounting firms and two corporate service providers. Nine are small, six medium-sized and four part of large networks. Seventeen work in English and 17 in Danish, and real estate and construction are the industries named most often. Ten are in Copenhagen and four in Aarhus, and the Denmark guide covers the legal steps to read before you compare.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a Danish accountant for a branch of my foreign company?

A branch sends the foreign company's audited annual report to the authority, and the branch managers are responsible for it. Ask a firm whether it also keeps the branch's local books and VAT records, since the filing and the day-to-day bookkeeping are separate jobs.

Can I get my Danish bookkeeping reported in English?

Many firms can. Seventeen of the 19 firms on this page work in English. Ask whether reports, invoices and the annual report summary come in English, and whether the legal filing itself is prepared in Danish.

Is bookkeeping included in a monthly fee?

It varies by firm. Five of the 19 publish prices. Ask for a written list of what the monthly fee covers: ledger, payroll, VAT returns, annual report and the answers to the tax authority.
