Payroll in Denmark

Hiring in Denmark means registering as an employer, and the first deadline comes quickly: the guidance asks for registration for the ATP pension scheme within eight days of the first wage payment. After that come monthly withholding, labour market contributions, payslips and the quarterly contribution reports. For a foreign owner, the extra points are employees who have no Danish civil registration number yet and staff who live abroad.

Ask a payroll firm whether it runs the payslips itself or only reviews them, what happens when an employee changes tax card mid-year, and how it handles holiday pay and pension. If you hire people from abroad, check that the firm has done so before, and that it works in the employee’s language as well as yours.

Frequently asked questions

When must I register as an employer in Denmark?

The official guidance asks for ATP registration within eight days after the first wage payment, so prepare the registration before the first salary is paid. A payroll firm can handle it with you.

Can a firm run payroll for staff who do not speak Danish?

Some can. Check the languages on each profile. Sixteen of the 17 firms here work in English, and one works in Polish. Ask whether payslips and tax-card questions are handled in the employee's language.

Does payroll come with the accounting fee?

Not always. Ask for payroll to be quoted per payslip or as a monthly fee, and for the quote to say who sends the reports to the authorities.
