Residency and visas in Denmark

Owning a Danish company does not by itself give the owner the right to live in Denmark. EU and EEA citizens follow one set of rules, and everyone else needs a permit. One route for founders is Start-up Denmark, where the business idea must be approved by a panel of experts appointed by the Danish Business Authority, and the applicant must own all or part of the company. Work permits for employees are a separate track.

Immigration advice is a different skill from accounting. Ask a firm whether it prepares the business plan and the application, or only refers you to a lawyer, and whether it has done so for your nationality. Ask what it needs from you, how it keeps track of renewals, and whether its fee covers the company side of the case.

Accountanty shows five firms in Denmark that help with residency and visas, all of them accounting firms. Two are small, two medium-sized and one part of a large network. Danish is offered by all five, English by four and Polish by two. Two are in Copenhagen and one in Aarhus. The Denmark guide covers the company steps.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a visa to run a Danish company?

It depends on your citizenship. EU and EEA citizens have different rules from other nationals. Ask a firm or a lawyer to confirm the route for you before you register the company.

Can an accountant apply for the permit for me?

Some firms prepare the company documents and the business plan and work with a lawyer for the application itself. Ask exactly which steps are included.

Does my family come with me?

Permit rules for a spouse and children are set separately and can affect the funds you must show. Ask the adviser to explain the family route from the start.
