Residency and visas in Hungary

Founding a company and living in Hungary are separate legal steps. A company can be owned and directed from abroad, while moving to Hungary to work in it brings immigration rules that depend on your nationality: citizens of EU countries register their stay, while others need a permit issued by the authorities. Immigration rules change, so treat any firm’s summary as a starting point and check the current requirements with the official body.

A firm can help with the supporting paperwork: company documents, proof of registered seat, employment contracts for the director, and appointments. It cannot grant a permit or promise an outcome. Ask which permit types the firm has handled, who files the application (a lawyer, the firm or you), and what the fee covers.

Accountanty lists 16 firms for residency and visa support in Hungary: 8 accounting firms and 8 corporate services providers. Size-wise, there are 9 small firms, 3 medium ones and 4 large networks. 16 work in English, 13 in Hungarian and 5 in German, and 14 serve foreign clients. If you have not yet registered the company, start with the Hungary guide or company formation.

Frequently asked questions

Does owning a Hungarian company give me the right to live there?

Not by itself. Owning or directing a company and holding a residence right are separate matters. Check the rule for your nationality with the official immigration body or a qualified adviser.

Can an accounting firm file a residence application for me?

Some firms prepare the supporting documents and coordinate with a lawyer. Ask who is responsible for the application and in what capacity they act.

How long does a residence permit take?

The time depends on the permit type and on the authority's workload, so no honest firm can promise a date. Ask what it has seen recently and plan for delay.
