Tax compliance in Hungary

Tax compliance in Hungary covers the returns and payments a company owes: corporate tax, VAT, local business tax and the employer’s filings. The Hungarian tax authority, NAV, states that the corporate tax rate is 9 per cent of the positive tax base. The rate is only one input: what counts as the base, which regime the company elected and how foreign-owned structures are treated all decide the outcome.

A founder abroad should ask a firm who prepares the returns, who signs them, how it tracks deadlines, and how it handles letters from the authority. Check whether the profile names the entity types it handles and whether it has experience with parent companies, branches or cross-border payments.

Accountanty lists 79 firms for tax compliance in Hungary: 66 accounting firms and 13 corporate services providers. The mix is 58 small practices, 11 medium firms and 10 large networks. Hungarian is spoken at 70 of them, English at 52 and German at 15, while 43 serve foreign clients. Pair this page with VAT in Hungary and the country guide.

Frequently asked questions

Which taxes does a Hungarian company usually deal with?

Most companies deal with corporate tax, VAT, local business tax set by the municipality and, once they employ people, payroll taxes and contributions. Which of these apply depends on the activity, the company type and the tax regime chosen.

Who is responsible if a return is filed late?

The company and its director remain responsible, even when a firm prepares the filing. Agree in the engagement letter who monitors deadlines, who approves the figures and who pays any penalty caused by missing documents.

Can a firm advise on tax in my home country too?

Some can, usually through an international network or a partner firm. Check the profile for cross-border experience, and ask who is accountable for advice on the home-country side.
