Accounting and bookkeeping in Hungary

A Hungarian company keeps its books in Hungarian forints under local rules, files its tax returns with the Hungarian authorities and deposits its annual report electronically with the Ministry of Justice’s report portal. For a founder abroad, that means someone in Hungary has to run the monthly bookkeeping, prepare the year-end accounts and keep the records in a form the authorities can inspect.

When you read a profile, check the languages the team works in, the company types it handles (a Kft. is the usual vehicle for a foreign owner), whether it reports to a parent company abroad, and whether it publishes prices. Ask which software it uses and whether you get read access to your own ledger.

Accountanty lists 77 firms that offer accounting in Hungary: 64 accounting firms and 13 corporate services providers, of which 57 are small, 11 medium and 9 large networks. 69 work in Hungarian, 50 in English and 15 in German, and 41 say they serve foreign clients. Almost all are based in Budapest. If you are still deciding on the company itself, read the Hungary setup guide first.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a Hungarian accountant if my company is owned from abroad?

In practice yes. The books, tax returns and annual report are filed in Hungary under Hungarian rules, in forints. A local firm knows the filing portals and the deadlines, and can report to you in English if that is the language you need.

Can I get monthly reports in English?

Many firms can. Look at the languages on each profile: 50 of the 77 firms listed for accounting name English. Ask whether the monthly pack is produced in English or only translated on request.

What should I ask before signing an accounting contract?

Ask what the monthly fee covers, how many documents it includes, who handles the annual report, what happens if you change director, and how you can leave. Ask for the scope in writing and compare at least two quotes.
