Tax compliance in the Isle of Man

The Isle of Man’s Income Tax Division publishes the company rates on its corporate tax rates page. The standard rate for resident and non-resident companies is shown as 0%, while banking business, land and property income and retail profits above £500,000 are taxed at other rates. Check the page for the year you need, since rates are set per year of assessment.

The rate is not the whole picture. A company still files a return, keeps records and, where it carries on a relevant activity such as holding, finance or fund management, may have to meet the island’s economic substance rules. Ask a firm whether it has handled substance reporting, how it deals with beneficial ownership filings and who signs the return.

Frequently asked questions

Do non-resident owners need to file anything in the Isle of Man?

The company files its own return and the owners may have beneficial ownership details recorded. Whether you have personal tax duties at home depends on where you are resident, so take advice there too.

What is economic substance?

It is a requirement for companies carrying on certain activities to show real activity on the island. The Income Tax Division sets out the sectors and the guidance. Ask a firm whether your activity is in scope.

Can a firm file the return for me?

Yes, firms commonly prepare and file the company return online. Agree who checks the figures and who monitors the deadline.
