Tax compliance in the UAE

The UAE now has two federal taxes that most companies meet: Corporate Tax and VAT. Corporate Tax applies at 0% to the first AED 375,000 of taxable income and 9% above that amount, and every Taxable Person, including those in a free zone, has to register and obtain a registration number. Special treatment for a company in a free zone depends on its income and activities, so a firm has to look at the facts before it says so.

Compliance work is the recurring part: registration, returns, deadlines, the records that support each figure and replies to the authority. Ask whether the firm is a registered tax agent, which returns it files for foreign-owned companies, how it treats groups with a parent overseas and who signs off before a filing is sent. Profiles show languages and the entity types handled. See the UAE country guide for the licensing steps that come first.

363 firms list tax compliance in the UAE: 185 accounting firms and 176 corporate services providers and 2 law firms. 116 say they work with foreign clients. Startups, small and medium companies and entrepreneurs are the most common client groups, and the sector named most is real estate. Frequently asked questions

What is the UAE Corporate Tax rate?

Taxable income up to AED 375,000 is taxed at 0% and the part above that amount at 9%, under the Cabinet Decision on annual taxable income. Qualifying free zone persons may be treated differently, so ask an adviser to test your case.

Does a free zone company have to register for Corporate Tax?

The Ministry of Finance states that all Taxable Persons, free zone persons among them, must register and obtain a registration number. The rate that then applies is a separate question, so ask a firm to review the company's activities and income.

How do I choose a tax adviser in the UAE?

Check whether the firm is a registered tax agent, which sectors and entity types it handles, and whether it has dealt with companies owned from abroad. Ask for a written scope that lists each filing and its date.
