Virtual office in France

A French company needs a registered office: the address on its statutes, its invoices and its entry in the commercial register. A founder without premises can use domiciliation, a contract with a provider that supplies the address, receives the post and holds it or forwards it. Domiciliation is a precondition for registration: the provider must hold an approval from the prefecture and the contract must run for at least three months, so ask for the approval details. The address works well for official mail, which keeps arriving whether or not anyone is in the country, but it does not show where the company is actually run, and that matters for tax and for banks.

What to ask a domiciliation provider in France

Ask whether the address can serve as the registered office for your legal form, and what the contract term and notice period are. Ask how quickly post is scanned, whether registered letters are signed for, and how letters with a deadline are flagged. If the firm also keeps your books, ask whether tax office mail goes straight to your accountant. Moving the registered office later means a new filing, so choose an address you can keep.

Frequently asked questions

Can a domiciliation address be the registered office of a French company?

Yes, that is its main use, provided the provider is approved and the contract is signed before registration. Ask for the contract and the provider's approval details early, because the registry checks them.

Is a domiciliation address enough to show my company is run from France?

It is not. An address shows where post goes, not where decisions are taken. If you manage the company from abroad, ask an adviser how that affects where it is taxed and what a bank may ask.
