VAT in Jersey

Jersey does not have VAT. It has a Goods and Services Tax, and the Government of Jersey states that the standard rate of GST is 5%, with mandatory registration at £300,000 of turnover in a 12-month period and voluntary registration below that. Many Jersey firms use “VAT” loosely for both, and a foreign founder who also sells into the UK or the EU may need VAT registration there too.

So ask each firm exactly what it handles: Jersey GST registration and returns, VAT in other countries, or both. Check how it deals with invoices to customers abroad and whether it files in the foreign jurisdictions itself or works with a partner firm.

Frequently asked questions

Is Jersey GST the same as VAT?

They work in a similar way, as a tax on supplies of goods and services, but Jersey runs its own GST with its own rate and threshold. VAT in the UK or the EU is a separate system with separate registration.

Do I need VAT registration abroad if my company is in Jersey?

It can happen when you sell to customers in the UK or the EU. The rules depend on what you sell and where the customer is, so ask a firm to review your sales before you start trading.

Can one firm handle both GST and foreign VAT?

Some can, either directly or through partner firms abroad. Ask which countries a firm files in, who signs each return and how the fee changes when you add a second jurisdiction.
