Audit in Malta

Most Maltese companies need their annual accounts audited. The directors deliver the accounts to the registry together with the auditors’ report and the directors’ report, within forty-two days of the end of the period for laying the accounts, under article 183 of the Companies Act. The audit is done by a separate, independent practice, which is why many groups use different firms for accounting and audit.

For a foreign owner the useful questions are practical. Is the firm independent of the one that keeps your books? Does it audit companies in your industry, such as funds, gaming or shipping? Can it work to your group’s reporting calendar when a parent company abroad needs figures early? Profiles show firm size and the industries and entity types handled, which is a quicker filter than reading brochures.

Accountanty lists 50 firms in Malta that offer audit, the smallest service page in the country: 44 accounting firms, 5 corporate services providers and 1 law firm. The size split is 32 small, 8 medium and 10 large networks. English is offered by 35, Maltese by 6 and Italian by 6. They name aviation, financial services and iGaming most often. Before you appoint an auditor, read the Malta guide and the Valletta page to see which practices work near the registry and the regulators.

Frequently asked questions

Who audits a Maltese company?

An independent auditor appointed by the company reports to the members on the annual accounts. The same practice usually should not keep your books and audit them, so expect two firms or two separate teams.

Should my accountant and my auditor be the same firm?

Independence rules usually keep the roles apart. Some groups use one network with separate teams. Ask any firm you are considering how it separates accounting and audit work for the same client.

When should I choose an auditor?

Before the year-end, not after. Early appointment lets the auditor agree the timetable, see stock counts and plan around your parent company's deadlines. Late appointments often cost more and finish later.
