Virtual office in Malta

A Maltese company must have a registered office in Malta, and its address and email address appear in the memorandum under article 69 of the Companies Act. Many foreign-owned companies get that address from a firm that provides a virtual office: a business address, mail handling and sometimes a meeting room by the hour.

The service is simple, but the details matter. Ask whether the address is shared, whether the firm will receive and scan official post, who is named as the contact for the registry and the tax authority, and what happens if you stop the contract. Check if banks and counterparties have accepted the address, and whether it comes with a telephone line or reception. A virtual office does not replace a physical presence where your activity or licence needs one.

In Malta, 61 firms offer a virtual office, made up of 30 accounting firms, 21 corporate services providers and 10 law firms. Firm size runs mostly small, at 38, with 18 medium and 5 large networks making up the rest. English is offered by 46, Italian by 12 and French by 11. Firms here mostly list aviation, iGaming and financial services as their sectors. See the Malta guide for how the address fits the registration steps, or compare firms in Sliema.

Frequently asked questions

Can a virtual office be my registered office in Malta?

A registered office in Malta is required, and many firms provide the address as a service. Ask yours to confirm in writing that it is acceptable for your type of company and activity.

Will a virtual office help me open a bank account?

It can, but banks make their own assessment of the company's substance. Be ready to explain where the work is done and by whom. Ask your firm what has been accepted recently.

Is mail handling included?

Often, but not always. Ask whether letters are scanned, forwarded or held, how fast, and what it costs. Official letters from the registry or tax authority should never sit unread.
