Tax compliance in Malta

Tax compliance in Malta covers the returns and registrations a company has to make with the tax authority: the company’s income tax return, provisional tax payments, and the paperwork that follows a share issue or a dividend. Maltese company income tax is charged at 35 cents on every euro of chargeable income under article 56 of the Income Tax Act, and how shareholders are then taxed is a separate step that depends on the person and the structure.

That second step is where foreign owners need advice, so do not treat a tax compliance quote as a tax opinion. Ask the firm whether it files returns only, or also advises on the structure, the owners’ home-country position and cross-border payments. Look in each profile for the entity types handled, such as holding or trading companies, and for any licences the firm declares.

In Malta, 118 firms offer tax compliance, made up of 62 accounting firms, 37 corporate services providers and 19 law firms. Of these, 92 say they work with foreign clients, and 22 offer Italian alongside English. The industries they name most often are aviation, iGaming and financial services. If you are still choosing a structure, start with the Malta guide and the company formation page, then request a quote through Accountanty.

Frequently asked questions

Is tax compliance the same as tax advice in Malta?

No. Compliance means preparing and filing the returns and paying on time. Advice covers how a structure, a dividend or a cross-border payment is taxed. Some firms do both, others only file, so ask for each to be priced and described separately.

Does a Maltese company also owe tax in my home country?

It can. Where you live, where the company is managed and what it earns all matter, and Maltese rules do not decide that for another country. Ask the firm whether it covers your home-country position or works with an adviser there.

What should I send a firm before it quotes for tax work?

Send the company's structure chart, the list of owners and directors, the last accounts if the company exists, and a short note on expected income and payments abroad. That lets the firm price returns and flag points that need advice.
