View profile of Grant Thornton Sweden ABWhether a Swedish company needs a statutory audit depends on its form and its size. Bolagsverket’s auditor page exempts small limited companies, but a company that has exceeded at least two of three criteria in each of the last two financial years must appoint one: more than 3 employees on average, a balance sheet total of more than SEK 1.5 million, or a net turnover of more than SEK 3 million. The auditor must be an authorised auditor (auktoriserad revisor) or an approved auditor (godkänd revisor). A parent group, a bank or an investor may also ask for audited accounts even where the law does not. Choosing the auditor (revisor) is a decision for the owners, not something to leave to whoever keeps the books.

Ask the firm to confirm in writing whether your company is required to have an auditor this year and on what basis. Ask who will sign the report and what qualification that person holds, when the fieldwork happens and which schedules the firm expects from your accountant. If your group reports under another framework, ask whether the firm can provide a reporting pack for the group auditor as well. Many auditors decline to audit books they keep themselves, so plan on separate firms for bookkeeping and audit, or ask how one firm keeps the two apart.
Twenty-three firms on Accountanty offer audit in Sweden, all of them accounting firms. Nine are small, six medium-sized and eight belong to large networks, and 11 focus on foreign clients. Fifteen are in Stockholm and eight in Gothenburg. Several describe themselves as authorised audit firms or as members of the professional association FAR. For the books themselves, see accounting in Sweden.
Not always. Small limited companies are exempt until they exceed at least two of three size criteria, on staff, balance sheet and turnover, in each of the last two financial years. A lender or parent group can still ask for an audit. Ask a firm to confirm your position in writing each year.
Eleven of the 23 firms that offer audit in Sweden on Accountanty say they focus on foreign clients, and 13 work in English. Eight of the 23 belong to large networks, which helps when the group already uses one auditor abroad.
Fifteen are in Stockholm and eight in Gothenburg. None of the firms listed in Mölndal or the smaller towns offers audit, so a company based there usually appoints an auditor from one of the two larger cities.
