Tax compliance in Sweden

Tax compliance in Sweden runs through the Swedish Tax Agency, Skatteverket, and for a company owned from abroad it starts with registering correctly. Once registered, the company files an annual income tax return on its result, and under the Income Tax Act a legal entity pays state income tax of 20.6 per cent of its taxable income. An employer must also file an employer’s contributions and PAYE tax return every month, and a VAT-registered company declares VAT as well. Payments and declarations follow a fixed calendar, and the dates depend on the company’s financial year and size, so ask your adviser to map them before the first deadline.

Questions for a Swedish tax adviser

Ask which returns the firm will prepare and file itself, and which it expects you to sign. Ask how it estimates the tax the company will owe for the year, and how it updates that estimate when results change. If the company buys services from its parent or sells to other group companies, ask how those prices are documented. Find out who replies when Skatteverket asks a question and whether that work is billed separately.

Frequently asked questions

Can a Swedish firm file the company's tax returns while I live abroad?

Yes. Every one of the 92 firms Accountanty lists in Sweden handles tax compliance, and 38 say they focus on foreign clients. Agree who signs each return and who receives letters from Skatteverket on the company's behalf.

What should a tax compliance quote in Sweden include?

It should name each return covered, the annual income tax return, the monthly employer return if you have staff and any VAT returns, plus replies to questions from the Tax Agency. Ask what is billed by the hour.

Which languages do Swedish tax advisers work in?

Swedish is the most common, followed by English with 39 firms. A few work in Finnish, Polish, Arabic, Estonian or Russian, which helps when founders want explanations in their own language.
