Audit in Cyprus

Cypriot companies prepare audited financial statements at the end of each tax year and file them with the annual return, as the Registrar of Companies explains. For most foreign-owned companies this means appointing an independent auditor early, rather than looking for one when the accounts are ready.

Choose an auditor on independence and fit. Many groups use a different practice for accounting and audit, so the people who keep your books are not the same people who test them. Ask which industries the firm audits, such as shipping, funds or real estate, which accounting framework it works to, and how it fits around a parent company that reports abroad. Ask what the engagement letter covers, and what is billed separately if records are incomplete.

Accountanty lists 166 firms in Cyprus that offer audit: 138 accounting firms, 23 corporate services providers and 5 law firms. Smaller practices lead the count at 135; 21 firms are medium-sized and 10 are large networks. English is offered by 94, Greek by 28 and Russian by 27, and 114 say they work with foreign clients. Ten publish pricing. Real estate, shipping and funds top the list of sectors that firms name. Read the Cyprus guide for the full set of obligations, or compare practices in Limassol.

Frequently asked questions

Does every company in Cyprus need an audit?

The registry guidance says a company prepares audited financial statements at the end of each tax year. Ask a firm to confirm how this applies to your company type and size.

Can the firm that keeps my books also audit them?

It depends on independence rules and on how the firm separates its teams. Many companies use two practices to avoid doubt. Ask any firm to explain how it manages the point.

When should I appoint an auditor?

Early in the financial year. That gives the auditor time to agree the timetable and to review controls, and it avoids a rush when the parent company needs figures.
