Payroll in Cyprus

An employer in Cyprus must register with the Social Insurance Services, as the Registrar of Companies notes. Payroll then covers the monthly cycle: calculating pay, withholding tax and social contributions, issuing payslips and paying the amounts due. A foreign founder who hires a first employee takes on all of it the day the contract starts.

Most small companies outsource this to their accountant. Before you do, ask the firm how it treats directors who are paid fees, employees who live or work abroad, and staff on fixed-term or part-time contracts. Ask for the cut-off date each month and what the fee covers: payslips only, or also the returns to the authorities and the year-end statements. A firm that works in your language and sends clear payslips saves you questions later.

Frequently asked questions

What do I need to register before my first employee starts?

Register as an employer and arrange payroll before the first pay date. Your firm can handle the registrations and tell you what the employee must supply, such as identity and tax details.

Can payroll be run for staff who work remotely from another country?

Sometimes, but treatment depends on where the person lives and works, and on the contract. Ask the firm to review each case before you hire, and ask whether it needs an adviser in the other country.

Is payroll priced per employee?

Often, with a monthly fee per person or per run and extra charges for starters, leavers and year-end work. Ask each firm to list these charges so quotes can be compared.
