Tax compliance in Cyprus

A company in Cyprus has to register with the Tax Department and obtain a tax number within sixty days of incorporation, according to the Registrar of Companies. After that comes the routine of returns, provisional payments and the filings that follow dividends, interest and payments abroad. Tax compliance is the work of getting each of these done correctly and on time.

It is not the same as advice. A compliance firm prepares and files; a tax adviser looks at the structure, the owners’ tax residence and cross-border flows. For a foreign owner both questions come up, and the answer in one country can differ from the answer in another. Ask each firm what it will file, what it will advise on, and what it expects you to take to an adviser at home.

Accountanty lists 237 firms in Cyprus that offer tax compliance: 150 accounting firms, 63 corporate services providers and 24 law firms. Of these, 168 say they serve foreign clients. Language coverage runs to 130 firms for English, 42 for Greek and 42 for Russian. Nineteen publish pricing on their profile. Sector fields on these profiles point mainly to real estate, shipping and funds. If you have not yet picked a structure, start with the Cyprus guide and the company formation page.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between tax compliance and tax advice?

Compliance is preparing and filing the returns and payments the rules require. Advice covers how a structure or a transaction will be taxed. Some firms do both; ask for the scope and fee of each.

Do I owe tax in my home country if my company is in Cyprus?

It can depend on where you live, where the company is managed and where it earns income. Cypriot rules do not settle your home-country position, so ask whether the firm covers it or works with someone who does.

What does a firm need from me to file the first return?

The company's registration documents, ownership details, the books and bank statements for the period, and a list of transactions with related parties or abroad. Your firm can send a checklist.
