Accounting and bookkeeping in Spain

A Spanish company keeps its own books and produces annual accounts, whatever the nationality of its owners. The directors prepare those accounts within three months of the financial year end, so a foreign owner needs someone who can close the year in Spanish and keep the ledgers in line with local rules. Day to day, that means recording invoices, reconciling bank accounts and preparing the figures the tax returns draw on.

When you compare profiles, look at the languages offered, the entity types handled (S.L., S.A., branches, subsidiaries) and whether the firm states a monthly fee. Ask who will actually keep your books, which accounting software it uses and whether you receive reports in English.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a Spanish accountant if my company is managed from abroad?

In practice yes. Books, tax returns and the annual accounts are filed in Spain, in Spanish, under Spanish rules. A local firm that also speaks your language keeps the filings on time and lets you follow the numbers.

What should an accounting engagement letter cover?

It should name the services included, such as bookkeeping, annual accounts and tax returns, the fee and how often it is billed, who your contact is, the reporting language, and what happens if you move to another firm.
